Storm Water / MS4 Program

Storm water can be found everywhere! According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA,) "Storm water runoff is generated from rain and snowmelt events that flow over land or impervious surfaces, such as paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops, and does not soak into the ground. The runoff picks up pollutants like trash, chemicals, oils, and dirt/sediment that can harm our rivers, streams, lakes, and coastal waters."

The City of Greencastle's storm water conveyance infrastructure is known as a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) and is regulated by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM.) This mandate contains a number of minimum control measures that help guide the municipality in making sure our storm water quality and quantity are maintained in the best ways possible.

Under Report a Spill

If the spill is life-threatening, call 911 immediately or call IDEM's 24-Hour Emergency Spill Line toll-free at 888-233-7745 or 317-233-7745. To schedule an incident inspection, contact the Planning Office at 765-653-7719 to leave a message.

Under Learn How to Improve Stormwater Runoff from My Property

Rain gardens, limited fertilizers, proper tree choice for lawns, and removal of pet waste can all help improve the quality of stormwater as it runs off properties toward rivers and streams. More information will be posted soon.
